If we reduce energy intake by too much we are likely to be in an energy depleted state. So what can we do!!? We want to be eating as much food as we can with the majority coming from nutrient rich whole foods while still working towards our goals.
This allows us more wriggle room for occasional treats and makes your new active lifestyle habits more sustainable. Find a form of physical activity you enjoy and do it consistently. Whether it be the gym, jogging, cycling, hiking or team sports. Regular exercise is the best predictor of weight maintenance. Increase training volume gradually. Be prepared for fat loss to stall. Plateaus are going to occur. Be flexible in your diet in order to make it as enjoyable as possible.
Wrapping it all up. Want to know the most important factor in maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle? Moderation is more important than you think. I am the poster child for all things diets and trying to lose weight.
I have tried everything over my lifetime and always end up with the same results: I lose X amount of pounds and feel great, but then a few weeks pass and I start eating too much and the weight comes back.
It sucks, I know, but it's because when you diet, you don't truly learn moderation. If you try a diet program such as Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers, you can argue that you are learning how to have a healthy lifestyle because you see the weight coming off. The problem is you aren't learning how to keep this up once you're done with the program. With Jenny Craig, your food is pre-made for you and is usually a frozen meal. This will automatically decrease your food intake. Chew your food slowly, paying attention to the taste and texture.
Fill your plate with the foods you desire and avoid eating foods just because they are offered. If you feel hungry after eating this smaller amount of food slowly and with intention; wait a few minutes.
Allow your body time to digest and then decide if you still are feeling hunger. If so, eat. If not, tell yourself you are free to eat at any time and that you do not have to deprive yourself.
You are simply waiting until you are truly hungry again. Eating in moderation is a way of life, not a way of dieting. If you choose to practice this health tool, you may find a new sense of confidence and awareness of yourself and your body.
As you begin to eat what you desire, in the amounts your body needs, you will probably find yourself eating a more balanced and wider selection of foods. While you may enjoy your newfound, healthy and productive hobbies, remember that they, too, should be done in moderation. Sometimes, too much of a good thing can be bad for you , and even though you may see nothing wrong with exercising every day or working hard to prove yourself, when done in excess, those healthy and productive habits can be detrimental to your health and mind.
Moderation is, indeed, key to a healthy lifestyle, as it reintroduces balance into our lives while also bringing numerous other benefits which make all the effort it takes worth our while.
